The Samsung Reclaim -

The Green Environment Friendly Mobile Phone

The use of bioplastics, which are environment friendly biodegradable plastics that are made from feed stock instead of petroleum like other plastics while usually only used for making disposable cutlery and packaging supplies, is now being used by Samsung to make mobile phones.

The green phone from Samsung, which was released on August 10, 2009, is called Reclaim and the casing of the phone is mostly Samsung-Reclaim-Green-Phone.jpgmade from organic corn-based plastic.

While this phone is not completely biodegradable because the batteries contain heavy metals, it is 40 percent corn-based biodegradable plastic and 60 percent standard plastic.

This is a major advance in the green production for consumer electronics. In the past manufacturers of gadgets have been wary of using bioplastics to manufacture their electronics because there was little testing done as to their durability and color fastness, but Samsung seems to be the leader in launching just such a green phone with the Reclaim.

And while we cannot say the Samsung Reclaim is a totally green phone, it’s certainly a good start and will hopefully lead other manufacturers and brands of electronics to follow suit and embrace using biodegradable plastics and wean away from our dependence on petroleum products.

The Samsung Reclaim is a cool color green that lights up in green when the battery is fully charged comes with web surfing capability, GPS and a nice full slide-out keyboard.
